Paternity Leave
The Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL) is a scheme given to working fathers to take time off from a job after a child is born. This encourages fathers to have parent-child bonding and to provide support to the mothers whom often need time to rest and recover after giving birth.
A working father is entitled to 2 weeks of paid paternity leave, capped at $2,500 per week, if he meets the following criteria:
- The child is a Singapore Citizen.
- Father is lawfully married to the child’s mother between conception and birth.
- For employees who have served their employer for at least 3 months before the birth of the child.
Leave Arrangement
Paternity Leave can be taken by either default leave arrangement or flexibly through mutual agreement between employee and employer.
By default arrangement: Take leave continuously for 2 weeks within 16 weeks from the child’s date of birth.
By mutual agreement: Take leave continuously for 2 weeks within 12 months from the child’s date of birth. Or, split the 2 weeks of leave into working days, take them in any combination within 12 months from the child’s date of birth. Paternity leave can even be taken in durations shorter than one day.
Calculating Paternity Leave Entitlement
Total entitlement = 2 weeks X number of working days in a week of the father
For example: 2 X 5 = 10 leave days (*Capped at 6 working days per week)
